INTRODUCTION

One of the main difficulties in coaching and improving performance in bowls is trying to measure performance and skill development. I have no doubt that this is essential for players to improve past being an average bowler. Skill can be defined and measured and I will give you some examples and methods to achieve that.

Skill evaluation needs to be done in a controlled situation such as at a practice session. The main benefit is to establish base line measurements that a useful in comparing development in skill development. Results can be used to compare an individual's progress or team mates against each other. Results can also be compared against skill standards enabling players to compare themselves to the best in the country and world.

Skill testing is time consuming but absolutely focuses the player onto important components of the game. This will direct practice sessions and can be an important reality check or motivator for players.

Performance evaluation is measuring play and results. This is best done in actual competition but is also most valuable in practice sessions that simulate a game situation. Rather than have meaningless practice important performance indicators can be obtained by measuring play in practice games. This also will stimulate motivation to concentrate and perform.

Finally comparison of results from practice and competition will indicate a player's ability to transfer practice skill, technique and concentration to the real pressure situation of a competitive game. This can further assist in a more sophisticated assessment of a players development and practice needs.

2. Evaluating Bowling Performance

The Bowls Grid is used to plot the finishing position of all draw shots played. Use this either in practice or a competition game to easily analysis draw shot performance. Using the Bowls Grid is easy but may take some practice and estimation. If in unsure of the finishing position or intention of the shot give the player the benefit of the doubt. The results are not infallible and are at best good indicators of performance and standard. However, as more data is collected the results will become more valid and meaningful for comparative purposes.

This information will allow you to evaluate weight control, aiming line, and accuracy of draw shots. Compare practice results to game results.

Bowls Grid for recording manually (on paper)

Copy the Grid and plot each bowl played by placing a mark on the grid for Forehand and Backhand draw shots. The position plotted is the finishing position of the bowl RELATIVE to the intended target spot.  For a position bowl that means the centre of the Bowls grid is moved to the intended finishing position of the bowl. For a Word doc. copy click here to copy and print.

For an analysis, either;

Total up the bowls in each area and divide by the total bowls to determine a percentage score.

or,

Use the Excel worksheet. Transfer the results from the Bowls Grid to the tables of and then a REPORT will be automatically produced for you to PRINT or copy. Click here to Order  Further instructions are included on the Excel worksheet.

Bowls Grid for recording onto computer.

This is an Excel worksheet with automatic formulas and calculations. This is available on order on the ecoachbowls CD ROM. Click here to Order

For each draw shot bowl enter the number of the finishing position area on the Excel worksheet. You can then automatically complete a performance analysis. Simply enter the data for each bowl as you go, directly onto the worksheet. If you enter every bowl played either in a practice session or a competition game you will be able to create a complete performance analysis.

The performance analysis includes;

Draw shot results for F/H and B/H and total draw shots played
SHOT USAGE information
Evaluation of WEIGHT CONTROL and AIMING LINE
Analysis of SHOT EFFECTIVENESS.

Worksheets for Evaluating Bowls Performance.

There are Excel worksheets that will automatically complete the calculations and analysis. You  can then print a report from the worksheet for each player and SAVE their individual results. This can be done manually as well. If you would like help on using the computer to do this email me and I will try and assist you.

Further instructions are included on the Excel worksheet. Including Weighted shot recording and how to record Shot effectiveness data. This is available on order on the comprehensive CD ROM. Click here to Order
